During this workshop student will explore classic techniques of sgraffito as well as the details of wall and panel preparation.
Learn about classic system of preparation of the colored plasters for base intermediate and top layers of plaster.
One-layer and two-three layer classic sgraffito systems with lime-paint and plaster top coats will be studied and practiced.
Sgraffito work often includes details painted in buon fresco which is also addressed during this workshop. Up-to three 16X16 sgraffito frescoes will be created.
All materials for this
workshop are provided by the studio. Student required to prepare and
bring a minimum of 4 fresco cartoons (16X16
inch) for the frescoes they plan to paint during the class. How to
prepare Fresco Cartoon is explained in detail in the, pre-requisite "Buon Fresco Foundations DVD Tutorial Set in Volume 2"

.During this workshop each student creates
2 to 4 sgraffito frescoes.
Class size is limited to the maximum of
6 people.

Workshop Details:
|
Day 1
Introduction,Plaster and Tile Preparation. Pigments & Colors for mixing colored plaster layers.
9:30 AM till 5 PM |
- Plaster and Tile preparation. Study of the specific differences
between Fresco and Sgraffito Wall, Fresco and Sgraffito Panel and Sgraffito Fresco
Tile.
(There is
NO difference in chemical process that
takes place while you paint in buon fresco
whether it as a wall, a panel or a tile.
However methods of plaster application and
painting slightly differ - we will study
that during the workshop).
- Fresco Tiles for Sgraffito- we will
prepare and condition 16X16 ceramic tiles
for fresco painting.
- We will prepare colored plasters for negative space and half-tone layers
- Traditional Buon Fresco
Tools & Materials - you will be introduced
to a wide range of scraggito and fresco materials and
tools, their use and sources.

Day 2
Final Cartoon selection and its adoptation to Sgraffito, refinement and tracing,

- Cartoon - we will learn
about Sgraffito Fresco Cartoon, review, adjust
and PREPARE for SGRAFFITO cartoons that you brought, make
tracings and prepare days ahead. You
must come with your own cartoons (drawings)
to any of our workshops. Allthough for Sgraffito work elaborately shaded cartoons are not requqred and the one can
work off a simple contour drawing we suggest to study
"Small
Fresco Cartoon Article" and have them
prepared as if they were for fresco painting.
- Scraffito variations - students will study and test several sgraffito technique variations
in detail and make technique selections for upcoming days.

Day 3
Sgraffito Fresco Tiles - Creating
9:30 AM till 5 PM |
- Depending on Sgraffito Technique Variation chosen, student will
apply final Plaster and/or Lime Paint Coats to
the tiles we prepared on the previous days
- Transfer Cartoons onto a
fresh plaster
- Greate a Sgraffito work

Sgraffito Fresco Tiles - Creating

- Depending on Sgraffito Technique Variation chosen, student will
apply final Plaster and/or Lime Paint Coats to
