BYZANTINE FRESCO TECHNIQUES
4-day Professional Buon Fresco Workshop

 
 

During this workshop students will learn painting techniques as practiced in Byzantium and presently in the Orthodox Christian tradition as well as the details of wall and panel preparation. Students will learn specific methods of applying color and painting principles of the "canon" as well as discover merging points and crosspollination with Italian frescoes. Each student will create up-to three 16X16 frescoes.

All materials for this workshop are provided by the studio. Student required to prepare and bring a minimum of 4 fresco cartoons (16X16 inch) for the frescoes they plan to paint during the class. How to prepare Fresco Cartoon is explained in detail in the, pre-requisite "Buon Fresco Foundations DVD Tutorial Set in Volume 2" general guidelines can be seen in "Small Fresco Cartoon" article (click here). .

During this workshop each student paints 2 to 4 buon frescoes Class size is limited to the maximum of 6 people.

Workshop Cost:

It is required to enroll/register a minimum of 10days before the scheduled date of the workshop.
Class limit - a maximum of 6 students.

This is an example of a Fresco Workshop Syllabi. It is based on preconfigured curriculum for our "4-day Introduction to Fresco Private class.

Workshop Details:


Day 1

Introduction, Cartoon, Tools & Materials, Plaster and Tile Preparation.

9:30 AM till 5 PM

  • Plaster and Tile preparation. Study of the specific differences between Fresco Wall, Fresco Panel and Fresco Tile. (There is NO difference in chemical process that takes place while you paint in buon fresco whether it as a wall, a panel or a tile. However methods of plaster application and painting slightly differ - we will study that during the workshop).
  • Fresco Tiles - Introduction to Fresco Plaster - we will prepare and condition 16X16 ceramic tiles for fresco painting.
  • Cartoon - we will learn about Large Fresco Cartoon, review, adjust and refine cartoons that you brought, make tracings and prepare for painting days. You must come with your own cartoons (drawings) to any of our workshops. Please study "Small Fresco Cartoon Article" and have them prepared.
  • Traditional Buon Fresco Tools & Materials - you will be introduced to a wide range of fresco materials and tools, their use and sources.


Day 2

Final Cartoon selection, refinement and tracing, Pigments & Colors mixing and testing.

9:30 AM till 5 PM

  • Pigments & Colors - we will learn about details of paint conditions specific to the theme of the workshop, prepare and test fresco paints.
  • Cartoons and Tracings - We will select final versions of cartoons and make tracings.
  • Paints Selection - We will select colors for upcoming painting and do a trial studies in preparation for painting days.


Day 3

Fresco Tiles - Painting

9:30 AM till 5 PM

  • Mix paints
  • Apply Painting Plaster Coat to the tiles we prepared on the previous day
  • Transfer Cartoons onto a fresh plaster
  • Paint a fresco (it is possible to paind more then one, either one after the other or side-by-side)


Day 4

Fresco Tiles - Painting

9:30 AM till 5 PM

  • Mix paints
  • Apply Painting Plaster Coat to the tiles we prepared on the previous day
  • Transfer Cartoons onto a fresh plaster
  • Paint a fresco (it is possible to paind more then one, either one after the other or often we paint two side-by-side)
